Found throughout the North American grasslands, prairie dogs are a member of the ground squirrel family. These stout-bodied rodents are known for building large underground burrows called towns, with one in Texas being measured as large as 25,000 square miles. Prairie dogs communicate with a high pitched chirp as well as “kisses” with one another.
