Bison are symbolic of the Great Plains, and once thousands of them thundered across North America. Now their numbers have severely diminished. Bison are known for their shaggy brown fur, weighing up to one ton, and massive size. Despite their massive size, bison can run up to 40 miles an hour and travel in large herds during the summer mating season.
