Sombra the Jaguar

Meet Sombra the Jaguar! He is the largest cat species in the Americas and the third largest in the world. Jaguars typically live in wet and dry forests but are also found in desert areas like Arizona.

In November of 2016, a camera in the Dos Cabezas Mountains of southeast Arizona caught a shot of a rare animal: a jaguar. Seven months later, the jaguar was seen again on a different camera in the Chiricahua Mountains. The students at Paulo Freire Freedom School in Tucson chose the name "Sombra" for the big cat, which translates to "shadow" in Spanish and befittingly represents the elusive nature of jaguars. Since his naming, Sombra has been spotted a handful of times in Arizona, making him one of only three wild jaguars confirmed to reside in the Grand Canyon State.

Today, the jaguar faces several serious threats to its survival. The species has been almost completely eliminated from the United States, and its population in Central and South America is in decline because of habitat destruction, trophy hunting, and conflict with humans. The most recent scientific assessment from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species indicates that the current range of jaguars is about 51% of their historic range, and they're classified as endangered. Jaguars once lived as far north as the states of New Mexico and Arizona and as far south as Argentina.
