Great Curassow occurs as two subspecies; one is endemic to the island of Cozumel and is very rare, numbering only about 300 birds. The more common subspecies is distributed from eastern Mexico south through Central America to western Colombia and Ecuador. While the range of the great curassow extends from southern Mexico to western Ecuador, their habitat is usually limited to national parks and reserves.
