These graceful creatures glide through oceans all over the world! As an endangered species with ~60k females left in the wild, threats like net capturing, pollution, and nesting beach destruction are a major problem—especially since every 2-3 years they travel 12,000+ km back to where they hatched, in hopes to lay their own eggs.

Thankfully, Conservationist groups like the National Marine Fisheries Service are taking action! They even rescued and raised Ted since he was a hatchling, making him one of the first turtles to test the Turtle Excluder Device (TED!). These escape hatches in fishing nets allow them to break free when trapped! After playing such a crucial role in pioneering technology that helps protect endangered sea turtle species, he was voted Orlando’s most-loved animal.
